Hey,
The day finally came... after a year and a half with metal brackets, half a year of an Expander I'm finally free! I got my braces off on the 20th of July.
So, lets start with why I got work done on my teeth.
This (cringeworthy) photo of me way back before I even knew what braces were, shows you roughly how bad my teeth really were. (Side note: Please hold your judgement on my makeup it was for dance competitions and I shudder to think what my mother was thinking)
Basically, I had a bit of an under bite, a whole lot of cross bite and my teeth up top were very crooked. My mouth wasn't really shaped for a smile hence whatever this is on my expression!

| (Not my photo - I wasn't particularly keen on photos..) I also didn't have braces yet. |
It caused a gap between my front teeth, that previously wasn't there, I was quite self conscious around this time. If I smiled it was with my mouth closed!
Braces
In May of 2014, I got braces! There was a three month process where I had both braces and expander, but luckily we only had to tighten it once a week. The gap between my teeth closed, and I got my expander off! (Happiest day ever!)
I started with white braces, I think just ceramic ones.

| Oh yes, more beautiful mouth photos to come... |
I had these plain white ones for a lot of my appointments, I really wasn't interested in bright colours, which might have been better because the plain ones go yellow and gross VERY fast.
I then got elastics, to wear only at night. My elastics weren't painful at all, and by then I only felt uncomfortable when I got new wires etc.
I ventured out! Colour! Baby blue it was called, that went a bright green/mint colour after a month (or after curry/noodles..) I am definitely pleased that I went blue because the gross yellowy colour made my teeth look terrible.
For my last colour, I tried out baby pink. I think this is my favourite, mainly because I can finally smile, and it was so exciting! I was told at that appointment, to book for six weeks, and then two weeks after that. The six week appointment I was told to wear one elastic all day (to perfect the crossbite and make it normal) and then the other side as well at night.
I think the two weeks was crazy long, and passed so fast. I was insanely excited! The day I was getting them off, was the first day back of term 3, so I wasn't quite as pumped about that.

The removal of the braces
I came in around midday, there was a lot of waiting for everything to be set up. I think I was most worried about the pain, but in the end, the most painful part was the buffing and polishing process..
So, you go in, and they put in cheek stretchers, to keep your mouth open. They then, literally just clip the brackets, and everything just slides off!
Getting the glue off was very weird. You feel your mouth and it feels like a mouthguard, and to be honest, it's disgusting! You then get a blue light (I have no idea of dentistry I apologize!!)
Then the worst part happens. You're basically lying there defenseless and a drill like thing that smells like burning plastic attacks your mouth. It's great. But, in all honesty I would go through this for my smile at the end, like having a smile you can be proud of, not insecure about is important. I know heaps of people can't afford it, I am very grateful.
I have gotten so many compliments, it's insane. People comment so much I get shy and weird! I genuinely appreciate my orthodontist so much, I remember when I got my braces on, he was dancing around singing One Direction. He makes people laugh, and feel at ease during a relatively stressful time!
If you have braces right now, trust me it really is worth it in the end. Plus, no one can really have braces forever can they? One day, they will come off and you will feel great.
Thank you so much for reading this! I hope you didn't cringe as much as I did at these photos!
Love,
Georgia-Maree xx
